Grandmother, Rose Chiariello DeMuro and Samantha, 1987.

Samantha R. DeMuro was born & raised in Cambridge, MA. Her identity as an Italian American Woman is tied deeply to her relationship with her Grandmother Rose (pictured above), who lived in Kearny, NJ most of her life. Samantha spent many hours of her childhood in the back seat of the family car driving to New Jersey to visit her Grandma.

Her academic background is centered around Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She holds a Master's Degree from Simmons College in Gender/Cultural Studies, where she studied the need for intersectionality in research about LGBTQ youth in child welfare systems. She has worked in Boston, Rhode Island, and NYC as an educator, counselor, and advocate for LGBTQ youth.

She is passionate about storytelling, communication, and the power of creating media to spark dialogue, and expand narratives. She is currently living in NJ and spends way too much time convincing people to take a Myers-Briggs test. (She's an ENFP).

*"Stories with some odds & ends" is inspired by a Grandma Rose phrase, whenever any family member asked her what we were going to eat. Rose would reply, "We're having some odds & ends," referring to leftovers, whatever was in the fridge, "giambott'"and any kind of concoction of foods she might cook together. The concept of "odds & ends" is how stories often emerge from us: in pieces, mixed up, in combinations, and in ways we may not expect.

About Me

The Italian American Women Visibility Project's goal is to provide an online space (a kind of virtual table / tavola virtuale) where Italian American Women across generations can share their stories through photos, videos, and words.

ABOUT IAWVP
